French Settlements in India were all the possessions acquired by the French East India Company in India from the second half of the 17th century onward, and officially known as the Etablissements français dans l'Inde from the resumption of French rule in 1816 to de facto their incorporation into the Union of India in 1947 and 1954. They included Pondicherry, Karikal and Yanaon on the Coromandel Coast, Mahé on the Malabar Coast, and Chandernagore in Bengal. French India also included several loges in other towns, but after 1816 the loges had little commercial Importance and the towns they were attached to which came under British administration .

The Universal Postal Union is a specialized agency of the United Nations that coordinates postal policies among member countries, in addition to the worldwide postal system. Before the establishment of the UPU, each country had to prepare a separate treaty with other nations that post had wanted to bring international mail to and from. The UPU was created in 1874
