Island in the North Atlantic Ocean, east of Greenland. Iceland became a republic in 1944. Formerly this country was united with Denmark under the government of King Christian X who, as a ruling sovereign of both countries, was assigned the dual title of king of each. Although the two countries were temporarily united in certain affairs beyond the king’s person, both were acknowledged as sovereign states.
