Tiny entity status on the southern side of the Pyrenees, between France and Spain, Andorra has maintained since the Middle Ages a sort of independence from both nations, in particular linked to the original form of government of the country which provided shared sovereignty between the chief of French state and the Spanish bishop of Urgel. The country has been given in 1993, following a referendum, with a democratic constitution which, while formally remaining a principality, has become a de facto parliamentary democracy
